Shoppers will have little reason to rush to stores for a one-day event as retailers start holiday sales early, offer the same discounts online and extend Black Friday deals for weeks or months.

Black Friday has been losing its clout in recent years, as more sales move online and make it possible for shoppers to browse from their couch.

Retailers are also trying to nudge consumers to start shopping earlier by extending their deals throughout the season instead of turning Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday into the official kickoff. In recent years, however, Black Friday's importance has faded. More retailers have offered similar sales online, making it possible for shoppers to browse and buy from their couch or on their smartphone rather than having to camp out in aparking lot, or cut through thick crowds at the mall. In the midst of a global health crisis, shoppers have even more reason to avoid long lines to snag a deep discount on a smartwatch, boots or a Nintendo Switch.

Those numbers have risen from 55% and 47%, respectively, from last year.Retailers are downplaying the one-day event this year, too. Many say they will start holiday deals as early as October and extend the offers throughout the holiday season.CEO Jeff Gennette told analysts last month that holiday demand typically occurs "between the goalposts of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
