: Amazon workers at six distribution centres in Germany staged a walk out on Black Friday, one of the busiest days of the year for online retailers, in a protest over pay and conditions.
Union Ver.di, which called the strike, accused Amazon of withholding basic rights from employees, to the point that they fall ill. It said in a statement: “Good work does not exist at a low price.”The strike is taking place on Friday, Saturday and Monday, and workers have walked out from Amazon warehouses in Leipzig, Bad Hersfeld, Koblenz, Rheinberg, Werne and Graben. Amazon employs 13,000 people across its 13 centres in Germany.
Protesters in France have also targeted Amazon facilities near Paris, blocking truck access to the sites, in demonstrations calling for the online shopping giant to “stop overproduction.” Friday's walkout is also the continuation of a long-running dispute between Ver.di and Amazon. The union is campaigning for Amazon to pay its workers in line with retail and mail order employees, however Amazon insists on paying its employees in line with workers in the logistics sector.
