Embalmer James Bryant of Lewis Funeral Home is the subject of 'The Passing On' documentary, part of SAAACAM's Black history film series.
James Bryants’ decades of work as an embalmer at Lewis Funeral Home is the focus of a new documentary The Passing On that SAAACAM is highlighting as part of a series about Black history.has covered a range of subjects from blues singer Bessie Smith, ballerina Misty Copeland, outspoken author James Baldwin, Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton and Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ marching band culture.
James Bryant embalmed his mother, Joetta Bryant, whose portrait sits between a portrait of his grandmother Mary Johns and a portrait of himself when he was completing his studies in Mortuary Science at Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service.During a particular exchange captured on film, Clarke became fascinated with the septuagenarian Bryant’s concern for passing his knowledge on to a new generation in hopes of seeing the Black funeral home tradition continue.
“There was this entire dynamic that I sensed in the moment but came to learn more as the project went along … which is James is nearing the end of his career and wants to pass on this legacy of the Black funeral home to a younger generation. At that point, I was like, ‘Oh, this is the film.
