'It’s not on reporters of color to change a culture that existed long before they began working in media. Still, change can come from us removing the veil of secrecy shrouding the too often unspoken ways we’ve endured systemic, long-term racism and abuse.'
, and so many more have been speaking out about harmful coverage, their experiences in toxic work environments, and pay disparities.
Through it all, I’ve felt myself “doom scrolling” through Twitter, feeling both triggered and frustrated.
Ivie Ani, a culture writer and on-air reporter, has been one of many reporters to speak about toxic work environments in the media industry. In June, the former Okayplayer music editor tweeted about being overworked, underpaid, not receiving basic work equipment such as a laptop, and sometimes receiving paychecks late. Several reporters have spoken out about their time at OkayPlayer and OkayAfrica, both previously run by Black CEO and Publisher Abiola Oke.
“Over the past year, we’ve also implemented several structural changes that include the hiring of a Finance Director to handle financial planning, strategy and payroll, as well as an Operations Director to ensure our community has the necessary workplace tools such as laptops. All happen to be Black women, and their mission is to provide our community with the resources to get any kind of support needed,” the statement reads.
Most notably, Ani’s tweets emphasized that simply putting a Black person in charge of a publication that seeks to recreate traditional media models doesn’t automatically root out systematic issues.
