BlackPanther: Wakanda Forever co-writer Joe Robert Cole reveals that the MCU sequel was originally going to feature more of T'Challa's son. 'We played around a little bit, but he was never going to have a much larger presence after Chad passed.'

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever co-writer Joe Robert Cole reveals that, prior to Chadwick Boseman's death, T'Challa's son was going to have a bigger role. The highly-anticipated sequel to Black Panther hit theaters several weeks ago, earning mostly positive reviews from audiences and critics. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever chronicles Shuri's grief following T'Challa's death while the nation of Wakanda deals with a new threat in the form of Namor .

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, co-writer Joe Robert Cole shares that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's original story was focused more on Toussaint. While Cole doesn't reveal too much of what this story would have entailed, he does explain that Boseman's tragic death in 2020 caused Toussaint's role to be substantially reduced.

"Yeah, [in] a previous iteration, we really were more child-focused in the narrative, and his son was a part of that. Obviously that changed, but we wanted him to exist in the film in some way. It was much more reduced.

The introduction of Toussaint may also speak to the role that Nakia will be playing in the future of the MCU. Outside of her appearance in the first Black Panther, Nakia hasn't featured in too many other Marvel projects. Acting now as Toussaint's only living parent, it's likely that the character will have her hands full for the foreseeable future, potentially meaning fans shouldn't expect to see her play any prominent role in MCU Phase 5 or Phase 6.

There are no concrete plans in motion for Black Panther 3 just yet, but the strong box office performance of, and generally positive reception to, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hint that a third movie may eventually come to fruition. Black Panther 3 feels like the most likely film that could further explore Toussaint as a character and his dynamic with Nakia and Shuri, but it's possible that he will also appear or be referenced in other upcoming releases.
