Big news down on the coast (mostly)
It is finally safe to go back into the water in - most of - Blackpool after no-swim warnings in place up and down the Fylde coast were lifted this afternoon .
Eight beaches were covered by the guidance following a United Utilities sewage discharge on June 12. According to the firm, 'short and sharp thunderstorms' saw nearly 40mm of rain fall in around two hours. Its system at sites in Blackpool temporarily reached full capacity and untreated sewage, mixed with rainwater, was released into the sea.
Around a week later, on June 18, further heavy rain saw untreated sewage released along the Fylde Coast again and the no-swim warnings remained in place.United Utilities had been carrying out repair work on a burst pipe at Fleetwood. While the damaged pipe did not contribute to a sewage leak, it saw the network overwhelmed while running at reduced capacity.
"Modelling and regular testing has been carried out on the waters across the Fylde Coast which has led to the EA lifting this advisory notice. We would like to thank everyone for their patience during this time."
