The weather service said the warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Saturday, as snow and winds as high as 60 mph move through. Wind chills plummeted as low as -30. A warning about the wind chill will remain in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday.
Travel is expected to be “very difficult to impossible,” as blowing snow will reduce visibility, the weather service said. The areas expected to be hit the hardest are Lake and Ashtabula counties, along with inland areas.“Temperatures this cold for an extended period of time will impact infrastructure across the region with frozen pipes a concern,” the agency reported.
The temperature was in the mid-20s at 4:15 a.m. at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, according to the agency, with wind chills around 13 degrees. By 6 a.m. it had dropped to 12 degrees and sustained winds were 29 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Across Greater Cleveland, temperatures and the wind chill continued to plunge, dipping below zero by midmorning., nearly all departures and arrivals scheduled Friday morning have been canceled. A restriction on high-profile vehicles on the Ohio Turnpike takes effect at 6 a.m. Concerns about the weather have led to the closing of government offices, some schools and other attractions today, including Cuyahoga County Offices, Cleveland State University, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
