The final years of the shuttle and subsequent dependency upon the Russian Soyuz for much of the 2010s showed the importance of having two launch systems that provide different technologies and personnel, so-called “dissimilar redundancy”, said Professor Newman.“In order to realise that capability, Starliner needs to show it is as low-cost and reliable as its SpaceX counterpart,” he added.
