Vincent Bolloré’s battle of egos and strategy with Silvio Berlusconi’s family is not fully over. But thanks to an adverse Spanish court ruling, Berlusconi-controlled Mediaset is now open to a truce with Bolloré’s Vivendi, writes LJucca:
Italy’s top commercial broadcaster Mediaset, in which the family of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is the largest investor, said on Aug. 5 that it was ready to seek a truce with its second-largest shareholder Vivendi, in which French financier Vincent Bolloré is the biggest shareholder.
Mediaset also said on Aug. 5 that it had dropped a 2019 plan to create a pan-European holding company based in the Netherlands called Media for Europe after a Madrid court ruling, initiated by Vivendi’s legal action, made it impossible to complete the project in the time available. The two companies’ four-year legal battle was intensified in 2019 after Mediaset announced plans to merge its Italian and Spanish operations into a Dutch holding company with combined advertising revenue of over 3 billion euros.
Fininvest, the Berlusconi family’s holding company, controls Mediaset with a stake of over 40%. Vivendi owns 29% of the broadcaster’s shares.
