’Life’s too short not to be an oddball,’ says picture book The Surprise.

It’s Kit’s birthday and before she heads to school, she opens a surprise gift: a box containing a sleeping guinea pig, dressed in a judo outfit. When the surprise wakes up, it’s surrounded by Kit’s other pets: Paul the bird, Dora the cat and Bob, the pug dog — all of whom wonder who she is and why she’s dressed like that. They decide she’s an oddball, which prompts her to explore “ways to make herself more like the others.

The results are occasionally worrying, but they land our guinea pig in the hands of Emily Brookstein, an upstairs neighbour who says “life’s too short not to be an oddball.” The two have a wonderful few hours together before Emily brings her home, where Kit calls her Maud and introduces her to the other pets, who ask if she can teach them judo.Article content

We’re told, on the book’s cover flap, that Zadie Smith and Nick Laird “usually write for grown-ups,” but Maud is a character any young child can relate to — all the more for the appealing, round and cuddly lines of Magenta Fox’s illustrations. For ages 3 to 7.
