Border Patrol arrests four accused of smuggling drugs and cash [Breaking]
Border Patrol agents arrested four U.S. citizens suspected of attempting to smuggle drugs and cash into the country in two separate incidents over the weekend, authorities said Monday.
The first incident occurred at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, when an agent sent a 2004 Dodge Durango to secondary inspection at the state Route 86 immigration checkpoint in El Centro, according to a news release from the El Centro sector of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A K-9 detection team alerted agents to a nightstand inside the vehicle with a false compartment used to conceal narcotics.
The 29-year-old male driver, the vehicle, and 64 pounds of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $244,140 were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The second incident incident occurred about 4 p.m. Sunday, when agents with dogs conducting anti-smuggling operations stopped a 2022 Honda Accord on Interstate 10 at Golf Center Parkway in Indio. A K-9 detection team discovered 13.5 pounds of fentanyl pills and and 12.2 pounds of cocaine, with a total estimated street value of $418,810 in a duffel bag concealed by a blanket, the release states.Agents also found $9,440 in cash wrapped in a rubber band in the vehicle’s center console.
