White House staffers are keeping an eye on the impeachment hearings in their offices on muted TVs or in small groups, but they're dismissing the landmark event as a tedious affair
Within the White House on Wednesday, aides quickly settled on Democrats’ biggest sin as they launched their first public impeachment inquiry hearing.President Donald Trump said he wasn’t even watching, too busy with other, more important work. Staffers kept an eye on the proceedings in their offices on muted TVs or in small groups, but they dismissed the landmark event as a tedious affair.
"The president and his top aides, supposedly disengaged, took the time to retweet roughly two dozen critiques of the impeachment process from Trump's personal Twitter account throughout Wednesday morning. “It’s a witch hunt, it’s a hoax. … I see they’re using lawyers that are television lawyers, they took some guys off television,” he said, presumably a reference to the fact that House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff had his counsel conduct much of the questioning, a tactic the committee’s top Republican, Rep. Devin Nunes, also employed.
The two witnesses, William Taylor, the top American diplomat in Ukraine, and George Kent, a deputy assistant secretary at the State Department, were prime targets for this invective as the duo testified about their belief that Trump had used security aid and a White House meeting with Ukraine's president as leverage to secure an investigation into Joe Biden, a potential 2020 rival.
