Nearly £60m of the levelling up pledge's funds has been returned to the Treasury

Fears that fire ants with painful sting will arrive in UK due to climate changeBoris Johnson and Nadine Dorries pledged to transform the lives of young people when they were prime minister and culture secretary The rollout of the National Youth Guarantee, initially announced in 2022, has been slow to make progress on targets to give 11 to 18-year-olds more opportunities to access extracurricular activities.

It was announced following the Government’s Youth Review in 2020, and was subsequently included as part of Mr Johnson’s flagshipAt the time, Mr Johnson said his government wanted to “break the link between geography and destiny so that no matter where you live you have access to the same opportunities”.

This follows cuts to the National Youth Guarantee’s predecessor fund, which was slashed by £120m as the new scheme was announced in 2022. But questions are being raised over whether the targets will be missed, with only 44 youth clubs given funding for renovations so far, over two years into the scheme. The revelation about the funding cut is also likely to anger Ms Dorries, who quit as an MP last year and has become one of Mr Sunak’s most outspoken critics. At the time the policy was announced, she said: “We want every young person, no matter where they’re from, to get the best start in life.

Now youth sector leaders are upset at the latest round of cuts, which they say will have a huge impact on the future of young people. “Sadly, we have already seen widespread cuts to public spending on youth services across the country. This is despite our own Untapped research showing that for every £1 invested in youth work, the benefit to the taxpayer is as much as £6.40 and how youth work is already saving the government £3.2bn a year through improved education and employment outcomes and positive impacts on mental health.
