Johnson will always have a media megaphone, but with many of the public just wanting to move on from the Brexit wars, even his own MPs may think he’s a slightly unhinged individual whistling into the wind 🖊️ paulwaugh for ipaperviews
The ex PM’s big problem is he’s better at protest than powerBoris Johnson delivered his long-awaited verdict on Rishi Sunak’s Brexit deal today on Rishi Sunak’s Brexit deal today, it was like he’d never been away.
But of course it was Johnson’s attack on Sunak’s Brexit deal that many of us were really waiting for and he duly delivered, saying he would “find it veryfor something like this myself, because I believed we should’ve done something very different”. For good measure, he said of his lockdown fixed penalty notice: “I still don’t understand the rationale behind it”. The news that Sue Gray, the civil service inquisitor-in-chief of that whole affair, has now become Starmer’s chief of staff will only further encourage his belief that his downfall was unfair.
There may be another reason he’s decided to really lash out at his successor so publicly. The danger of Sunak’s display of competent, focused governance in securing the Northern Ireland deal is that it leaves everyone thinking that he’s the PM who really “got Brexit done”. And without the lingering sore of that huge issue being unresolved, what’s the point of Johnson at all?
