Reality check: Boris Johnson‘s administration was more corrupt “than any UK government since the Second World War', according to Sussex University’s Centre for the Study of Corruption 🖊️ michael2day
Michael Day: ‘Like Trump and Berlusconi, Johnson’s mendacity is legendary.’ – not like over there, abroad, in southern Europe and those sorts of places.
Our former premier, Tony Blair, paid a gushing tribute this week to corrupt, tax-dodging Silvio Berlusconi, after the former Italian prime minister’s death on Monday. No doubt he was hoping we wouldn’t remind everyone of how the Blairs once enjoyed a free holiday at the media mogul’s expense. “Silvio Berlusconi was a larger-than-life figure with whom I worked closely for several years as prime minister. I know he was controversial for many but, for me, he was a leader whom I found capable, shrewd and, most important, true to his word,” Blair gushed. He could have mentioned they both supported the catastrophic invasion of Iraq. Wisely, he didn’t.
But I bet Blair was recalling how entertaining Berlusconi could be. Whether the Italian premier with mob money was or running around a fake volcano at his luxury Sardinian villa with a bandana on his head – to the delight of upstanding lawyer Cherie Blair , Berlusconi always had a smile on his face. Being cheery and charming works wonders if you play dirty in politics – more of that in a minute.
Many of us have spent the best part of 20 years laughing or grimacing at the gruesome twosome. Both orange, both short of political ideas, both habitual liars. They’ve only worked for their egos or bank accounts. Time that should have been spent governing was spent cheating on the golf course, in Trump’s case, or funding elaborate orgies in Berlusconi’s.
