Bob Boughner: “We know what happens when there’s a change in GM and we believe in what we’ve done here.”
SAN JOSE — Sharks players heard the news of Doug Wilson’s resignation as the team’s general manager only about a half-hour before it was publically announced.
Sharks president Jonathan Becher said Thursday that he and Joe Will, now the team’s interim general manager, would sit down immediately to discuss what they would be looking for in a successor to Wilson. The Sharks, though, are about miss the playoffs for the third consecutive season for the first time in the franchise’s 30-plus year history. A new general manager will likely want to put his or her own stamp on the organization and make changes to the front office, coaching staff, or the team’s personnel.
“This is really, I feel, my first full year where I’ve got to be able to work with these guys in an 82-game schedule and training camp and all those things,” Boughner said. “So I’m looking forward to doing that the same I know we can get better.”Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson feels that change is inevitable.
Wilson started what was originally announced as a temporary medical leave of absence on Nov. 26 and had only intermittently been in touch with Boughner and some of the team’s players in the months since.
