Unemployment rate in Brazil declined to 14.1% in second quarter
SÃO PAULO--Brazil's unemployment rate declined in the second quarter compared with the three months through May, with employers officially putting more workers on the books as the economy recovers from the coronavirus pandemic.
The jobless rate reached 14.1% in the three months through June, down from 14.6% in the three months through May and up from 13.3% in the year-earlier period, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, or IBGE said Tuesday. The figures from the IBGE measure the self-employed, under-the-table employment and jobs that employers register with Brazil's labor authorities. Unofficial jobs had been increasing in previous periods, and in the second quarter registered employment also began to increase.
"The growth of employment took place in various forms of work. Until now, we had been noticing increases in self-employment and unregistered employment, but little movement in formal employment. In the second quarter, however, there was a positive movement," said Adriana Beringuy, the statistics agency's research analyst for the employment numbers.
The number of people with jobs rose to 87.8 million in the three months through June from 86.7 million in the three months through May, while the number of people seeking employment fell to 14.4 million from 14.8 million during the same period. People with jobs registered with labor authorities rose to 30.2 million from 29.8 million in the three months through May.
