As Senators prepare for a weeklong Memorial Day recess, no progress has been made on the next phase of the federal government’s emergency coronavirus relief legislation by theothersarahh
As unemployment claims hit an astounding 38 million over a nine week period, some Republicans are speaking out and urging fellow lawmakers to take action and draw up details for a new economic relief bill ahead of a scheduled week-long Memorial Day recess.Senators in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill, May 19, 2020 in Washington, DC.
Senator Susan Collins said, “We must not wait; we should act now,” on the Senate floor on Wednesday. The issue is made all the more urgent by a fight brewing over extending the CARES Act’s enhanced unemployment benefits, which will run out in July. The House passed its version of a relief bill last week, but that bill is extremely unlikely to pass in the Senate in its current form.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told House Republicans Wednesday that an extension of those benefits “will not be in the next bill,”; McConnell has been a strong proponent of letting existing stimulus spending play out in the economy before passing any new legislation.
