Researchers tracked survival rates of women diagnosed with the disease between 1993 and 2015, and found the likelihood of death within five years was much lower for those diagnosed in the later part of the study.
The researchers concluded that"most [patients] can expect to be long-term cancer survivors".Poem shows how to check for breast lumpsSome of the reasons for the improvement in survival rates may be down to new treatments, improved radiotherapy, better detection and breast screening, and studies discovering the varying characteristics of breast cancer, experts said.
Dr Carolyn Taylor, professor of oncology at Oxford Population Health and lead author of the paper, said:"In the future, further research may be able to reduce the breast cancer death rates for women diagnosed with early breast cancer even more." Cancer Research UK said the figures were"heartwarming" and praised the scientific input contributing to the"huge improvements" over the last 20 years.
Doctors will be able to use the large-scale study to provide an accurate prognosis for women, the charity said.
