The Parkhead men are looking to end an unwanted piece of history when they kick off their campaign against Slovan Bratislava
Celtic fans were hoping for the best but braced for the worst. It was perhaps just as well no one had a clue what was going on at the revamped Champions League draw.
Slovan Bratislava are up first next week, but then it’s Club Brugge, Young Boys Bern and RB Leipzig who will head to Glasgow. It could have been worse. Much worse. The likes of PSG, Man City, Arsenal, Real Madrid and all the other big boys could easily have been sent to Scotland. And that is why Hoops fans have snapped up the tickets and expectation levels are soaring. Yet, perhaps some punters should hold their horses.
Samaras said: “I really believe in the team, but we need to see and understand the new format of the Champions League. People have explained it to us, but we need to see it live and see exactly how it works. I think Celtic are for sure a good team and have been for the last years, also with a good manager in Brendan Rodgers. But I feel it is a little bit of a wait and see. You see what are thought to be easier games in the schedule.
The Hoops fans’ favourite said: “Always, the fans are excited, but it is up to the form of the team and the way the players are playing, in the end. If you spend £1 million or £10 million on somebody, it comes down to how you play on the pitch. That is something for the gaffer to put into the system and the tactical things. Okay, spending money does not mean anything. We have seen clubs in the past spending crazy money and doing nothing.
