The Brentford ambassador, Marcus Gayle who played for the west London nearly 200 times, recently faced his fears and gave blood for the first time. His experience was documented in a video and will be released this weekend ahead of the club’s match against Crystal Palace.MC: Talk to me about the experience of giving blood?What fears did you have before?
We’re breaking down the barriers of the stereotypical person from an African-Caribbean background. There’s a great need for our blood type to be donated, because it’s going to help many people.Talk to me a bit about that stereotype, what do you think that comes from? What advice would you give to people who might want to donate but are afraid and how are Brentford encouraging this?
Only 1% of blood donors are from our community, there’s about 15,000 people that suffer with sickle cell. The solution can only come from our own community, unfortunately. That’s why there has to be a drive and an encouragement to those from our community to get involved.
