Dubbed a 'bullshitter' by Dominic Cummings, Michel Barnier, is named in a move designed to break a political impasse
Barnier, a seasoned figure with decades of government experience, hails from the conservative Republicans party, which came a distant fourth in the elections. However, Macron is counting on the 73-year-old Gaullist to secure support from his centrist allies, who came second, while Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally is expected not to abstain.
However, he was reviled in some quarters, while Dominic Cummings, once Boris Johnson’s top aide claimed he was “emotional,” “lazy” and a “bullshitter.” The current Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, submitted his resignation after the elections, but Macron refused to accept it, effectively keeping him in a caretaker role for the past two months, which included the Paris Olympics.
Having spent most of his career outside the angry cauldron of French parliamentary politics, Barnier is seen as a more unifying figure than some of the other candidates.
