The poll came after the Government’s chaotic so-called small boats week earlier this month, which ended in farce after ministers were forced to evacuate the Bibby Stockholm asylum barge following a Legionella bacteria scare. Jennifer Nadel, co-director of Compassion in Politics, said: “A barge is big and highly noticeable – perfect for grabbing headlines.“These are individuals who have left behind their home in the hope of finding safety and freedom – only to be locked up in a floating prison.“We know the Government is under pressure to manage the asylum system – but it’s pressure of their own making.”
