So here they are: the European Convention on Human Rights and Council of Europe are not part of the European Union; 19 out of the 46 states signed up are outside the EU; Belarus is not in the Council; and Russia has been expelled because of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Moving on. The Convention is not, as populists claim, a charter that only protects criminals and ne’er do wells, trans deviants or those on small boats who infuriate, and threaten our good lives. It recognises that humans are born free, yet are everywhere, even in mature democracies, constricted. And it protects us all from obvious and subtle tyrannical forces.

One key writer of the Convention was British Conservative MP and lawyer David Maxwell-Fyfe, previously a British prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials.
