We learn from an early age about the importance of our appearance, and we are taught to keep our mouths shut and to “behave like a lady.” Being called “fat” is akin to being called a four-letter word. As women, we are judged if we are deemed unattractive, and we are judged if we are deemed too attractive.
Fans wait for Taylor Swift to take the stage at an Eras Tour concert on June 2, 2023, at Soldier Field. And so the Swift concert left me in awe. The arena was filled with nearly 65,000 women and girls who were so kind and so full of joy. I saw many of them living in the moment and not using their cellphones; they were listening to her music from the first chord. I looked out into the crowd and saw vastly different women singing Swift’s words back to her, each connecting her words to their lives, many screaming or crying.I was wrong about Swift.
Any artist who has the talent to create the energy that I experienced is nothing less than phenomenal. And I can’t help but wonder what the world would look like if we women treated each other like Swift’s fans did that night.Submit a letter, of no more than 400 words, to the editor
