Long before Costa and Starbucks there was the 'milk bars'
A town in Cheshire is home to the last remaining 'milk bar' in Britain. National Milk Bars were a once popular chain that, at one time, had 17 outlets in the north west of England and Wales.
But National Milk Bars weren't the only ones around. 'Milk bars' began to spread around the country, and newspaper reports confirm they were popular across Manchester as well as Stockport, Oldham and Salford. But, by the early 1950s, many had gained a reputation as 'dens of vice' where the morals of the nation's youth were in danger of being corrupted.
Renowned academic Richard Hoggart - in his book 'The Uses of Literacy', first published in 1957 - described what he saw as typical "juke-box boys" and the new 'culture' he observed in 'milk bars'. Hoggart wrote: "Girls go to some, but most of the customers are boys aged between 15 and 20, with drape-suits, picture ties and an American slouch."
But it wasn't just Hoggart who thought 'milk bars' were having a corrupting effect on the nation's youth. Regular news reports pointing to youth crime, delinquency, and 'illegitimate' sex were associated with those frequenting 'milk bar' establishments.In January 1952, the Guardian journalist Norman Shrapnel quoted Salford’s medical officer of health, who described them as sinister places where "young people flock at night when they ought to be in bed".
