Before the world knew Brittney Griner as the WNBA star at the center of an international scandal, Houston knew her as a local basketball phenom. 'They're just seeing her as a criminal. That's not the case at all.'
Chester W. Nimitz Senior High School basketball players Aniah Holmes, left, and Kaiya Carter work on their dance moves during a break in strength and conditioning camp Monday, July 11, 2022, in Houston. Head coach Kendra Venzant is a former teammate of Brittney Griner when both played at Nimitz. To this day, Griner is still that same goofy person that's always looking to give back, Venzant said.
When Griner surprised Nimitz point guard Aninah Holmes after a game in early November, Holmes became starstruck. "It's just awesome to know a WNBA player came to our school," Holmes said Monday during a strength and conditioning camp."It lets us know that we can achieve the things that she achieved. It happened before so that means it can happen again."
"She told me that I have potential to go far with this and to try best," Holmes said."Whatever is outside of this gym to keep it out there and let this be your place to get it off your mind."Posters of Griner and her various accolades still adorn the navy blue and gold-themed walls of the Nimitz gymnasium.
