So I’m gonna talk about “Die Hard” right now , and about those feet, because those feet are the reason that “Die Hard” worked so well.In the beginning of that movie, audiences had no idea whether Willis’ John McClane was a talented cop or not, but they could venture an accurate guess. He was already a burnout. His wife was infinitely happier, and more prosperous, without him.
And when terrorists took over his wife’s office building, he wasn’t wearing any shoes and had no time to put some back on.Before “Die Hard,” I had certain expectations about action heroes, well hewn from years of watching Sly Stallone’s John Rambo cauterize his own wounds and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator walk out of a burning fire to kill off Sarah Connor. These were not men, these were demigods with really big guns. But John McClane very much was a man, and that made all the difference.
Did I wince while watching McClane pick broken glass out of his own feet? I did. I still do. You’ve cut your feet before. You know how much it blows. Thanks to Willis’ performance in that bathroom, you know that John McClane felt the exact same way. And you can tell that, by the end of “Die Hard,” John McClane just wants his s—ty day to be over.
He doesn’t WANT to have to foil a $650 million bearer bond heist to do it, but that’s the only choice he’s got. So he labors through killing all the bad guys and you can feel, from your seat, just how EXHAUSTED he is by the task. Like watching a basketball team play a game that goes 15 overtimes. You don’t even know how McClane is still standing at the end of the movie. He doesn’t know how.
“I can’t even figure my job out. I can’t figure out the proper metaphor to try to explain what it is I do, even to my kids. I can’t get it into a nice, cozy box — ‘This is what I do, and this is why.’ I still like it — you can’t beat the dough. But I’m sure there will be some kind of penance. The Catholic side of me — not that I am Catholic, but — just assumes that there’s going to be a bill to pay. I don’t know, maybe I should be doing something else, but I don’t know what it would be.
