Brush fire prompts evacuations near Potrero County Park [Breaking]
A brush fire near Potrero County Park prompted evacuations of nearby residents Sunday afternoon as firefighters battled the flames on the ground and from water-dropping helicopters and tankers, Cal Fire officials said.
The fire was reported about 2:40 p.m. near the regional park — which includes 37 campsites — on Potrero Park Drive. Nearly an hour later, the fire had burned about 20 acres, officials said. About 4 p.m., the fire had burned 40 acres. Evacuation orders were issued for homes on Potrero Park Drive. Homes on and near Potrero Valley Road were under an evacuation warning, officials said. People leaving their homes were directed to Steele Canyon High School at 12440 Campo Road, located south of Rancho San Diego.Potrero Valley Road was closed to traffic between state Route 94 and Potrero Park Drive.
