Burns Original BBQ marks its anniversary with annual Burns Day celebration
It all started on Nov. 19, 2019, when Mayor Sylvester Turner recognized Burns Original BBQ for its dedication and service to the community with a proclamation establishing that date as Burns Day in Houston.
“I couldn’t believe there was a menu I’d never seen,” Crawford said. “I asked my dad and uncle about it, and they confirmed it was from 1991 or 1992.”See MoreHis father Steve and uncle Gary worked for their dad Roy Burns most of their lives and now head up the pit room at the original location on De Priest Street in Acres Homes.
Eventually an idea was hatched to combine that old menu with Burns Day. On November 19, 2020, Crawford established a “throwback” day in which they would serve the old menu and prices. In addition to the $8 per pound brisket, chopped beef sandwiches were going for $3.25, three-meat plates for $6.75 and a slab of ribs for $12.50.
Still, the crowds showed up. Crawford deployed every one of Burns’ considerable barbecue resources to accommodate the many guests. The longest line was at the main restaurant, while one food trailer was stationed in a lot across the street, and another trailer in the parking lot next door.
