A bill including $875 billion for states was passed by the House last week, but the Senate is not expected to approve it.

to Congress, nearly 100 business leaders—members of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Task Force on Business and Jobs Recovery— ”urgently” request another $1 trillion in direct relief for state, local, and tribal governments.

The group says this funding will “protect core government services” like public health, safety and education. Those things, rather than rapid business reopenings, will encourage a lasting recovery, the group argues. Priscilla Chan of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Ben Horowitz of VC giant Andreessen Horowitz, and LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner are among the letter’s notable signatories.that states would need another $1 trillion to cover budget shortfalls while Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell proposed allowing states to go bankrupt rather than sending them more aid.
