A well-traveled stretch of road in the southwest suburbs will remain closed until further notice after a snag in a planned construction project, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

A portion of 127th Street where it crosses the Calumet Sag Channel on the border of Alsip and Crestwood had been due to close Nov. 4 for two weeks to complete installation of a water line, according to IDOT.The bridge had been closed just east of the intersection of 127th and Cal Sag Road, a few blocks west of Cicero Avenue and the busy interchange of Cicero and 127th.

That timeline would have meant a possible reopening Nov. 18, but crews working during excavation of the water line hit an unmarked fiber optic line, according to IDOT.It said that AT&T is working to repair the fiber optic line, after which work on the water line can continue. IDOT said it does not have a timeline for AT&T to complete repairs, but that work to finish the water line would take a week to 10 days afterward.

IDOT said that posted detours will continue, pushing traffic to Cicero and Harlem avenues as well as 135th Street. The water line installation is part of a planned replacement being done in conjunction with intersection improvements, and not part of the larger project underway to upgrade Oak Lawn’s regional water system, which extends new water lines into the south and southwest suburbs, according to IDOT.
