The 1975 season opener against San Francisco marks the only occasion when the Padres had opening day rained out at either San Diego Stadium or Petco Park
Rain moved through San Diego early Thursday morning, threatening the most anticipated opening day in Padres history.
Precipitation was reported on six straight days from April 4-9, though records show rainfall totaled only two inches for the month of April that year. The San Diego Union reported that pregame festivities were to include a softball game an hour before first pitch that featured Eddie Feigner and his court against a some “media celebrities.”
When the teams finally took the field two nights later, only 19,823 people went through the turnstiles. They also saw San Francisco right-hander Jim Barr throw 10 shutout innings in the Giants’ 2-0 victory. With so few rain reps, members of the Padres grounds crew — especially when the team played in Mission Valley — have been know to struggle covering the field.
It’s no wonder they made themselves at home. The odds of the tarp being touched were extremely remote.
