The Browns moved on from York on Monday, acquiring Dustin Hopkins from the Chargers.

York wasn’t perfect with the Browns. This preseason, he wasn’t close to “damn good,” either.I think the alley of perfection just got a bit too dark.By booting the game winner against Carolina, he singlehandedly stopped Baker Mayfield’s revenge game. It was the kick that launched a thousand tweets, a handful of t-shirts, and led just about everyone to believe that he was the much-needed stability at the position that the Browns needed post-Phil Dawson.

“I didn’t think I was going to have to go through another process like that,” York told cleveland.com then. “It’s the same as college, there’s just a lot more on the line. You’re on contract, you have your livelihood at stake and it’s a lot more cut-throat because there’s a lot of good guys that could take your job. So it’s definitely tested that. It’s tested my faith, it’s tested everything. I feel like I’m doing a good job with it, I just have to make sure the performance part is there.

“Great kid, hard worker, very in-tune with his mechanics, and almost too in-tune at times, I would say,” the Browns’ special teams coordinator said during OTAs. “So trying to get him to just kind of make everything simple, make the corrections fast and apply them to the next kick. We’re working through some things now. Operations have been pretty solid to this point.

Then he missed two possible game-winning attempts at the end of the third preseason game against the Eagles on Aug. 17. Continuing the pattern, he pushed a 47-yarder wide right. He was given a mulligan when the Eagles were flagged for illegal formation, but then he overcorrected and sailed the 41-yarder wide left.

There’s never been the doubt that York has the leg strength. But right now, for whatever reason, it’s not working here. He may come back to bite the Browns one day, perhaps even beat them with a game-winning kick in the future. But the timing just wasn’t right here given that this team is built to win now and is trying to make a Super Bowl run.
