The Caldor Fire has exploded in size from 6,500 acres to 53,772 acres in just over a day in Northern California, forcing thousands of people to evacuate and prompting a state of emergency

A Northern California fire that began Monday has exploded in size, growing from 6,500 acres to 53,772 acres in just over a day.

Fueled by high winds and dry conditions, the Caldor Fire has threatened 5,800 structures across El Dorado County, east of Sacramento. Grizzly Flats, a small mountain community, suffered significant damage as the fire spread Tuesday, according to Chris Vestal, a public information officer for the Caldor Fire. Photos by the Associated Press showed houses reduced to ash and scorched cars.

With multiple fast-moving fires burning across the state, Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said it was a particularly difficult time for the state’s emergency services. “Everybody is going to be sucking smoke for a long time,” the fire chief said at a joint press conference with state emergency officials.

Mr. Porter said the Caldor Fire was in a difficult area to contain. “Getting people out of the way of these fires is the best way for us to protect your communities,” he said. More than 16,000 individuals in El Dorado County have now been evacuated, up from 6,850 on Tuesday, according to the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.
