Advocates say Greg Rath’s nod to an anti-Semitic trope about Jewish control could “stir hatred.”
Congressional candidate and Mission Viejo Councilman Greg Raths apologized Thursday after Jewish community leaders raised concerns about what some termed “disturbing” anti-Semitic comments made by Raths during a recent candidate forum put on by the Orange County Islamic Federation.
Raths, who was responding an audience member’s question about U.S. aid to Israel, later added: “The Jewish community has never given me one dime. So I am not beholden to them at all.” Einstein said that because anti-Semitic hate crimes are spiking, the timing of Raths’ comment is particularly worrisome.
When Raths was asked to clarify his comment that he’s never taken money from the “Jewish community,” he said, “I have not taken money from any Jewish PAC, that is a true statement.” He did not explain if he was conflating “Jewish community” and “Jewish PAC.”
