California’s attorney general sued Uber and Lyft on Tuesday, saying the ride-sharing companies are violating a recently passed state law requiring them to classify drivers as employees instead of independent contractors—at a time when a pandemic has put additional economic strains on gig economy drivers.

The lawsuit accuses Uber and Lyft of depriving workers of benefits, such as a minimum wage, health care, overtime pay, reimbursement for business-related expenses, access to disability insurance and paid sick leave.critics say that isn’t enough to protect workers suddenly depending on a fragmented social safety net due to the pandemic .

Uber said in a statement it would fight the lawsuit in court, saying that “we need to make it easier, not harder, for people to quickly start earning” during the pandemic.California’s attorney general’s office declined to comment on why other gig companies, such as Instacart or Postmates, weren’t included in the complaint."Californians who drive for Uber and Lyft lack basic worker protections—from paid sick leave to the right to overtime pay.
