Opinion: Voters on the whole sensible on the props
Well, not always. But it surely was the case in this week’s election on many of the propositions with which we were presented.
Hundreds of millions of dollars in television advertising buys in favor of one of the two sports-gambling measures, Proposition 27, quite clearly worked against instead of in favor of it, as an amazing 83% of voters at last count gave it a thumbs-down. It was always clear, given most Californians’ pro-choice leanings, that Proposition 1, which will amend the California Constitution to explicitly protect the right to abortion in the state, would pass. Our editorial board has been skeptical of the need for it, noting that California Supreme Court rulings and state laws have already robustly established abortion rights in the state for decades, the measure was entirely symbolic and unnecessary.
For the third election in a row, the leaders of the Service Employees International Union have commandeered their members hard-earned dues to force on the ballot a completely make-work measure that would have required dialysis clinics to have more health-care providers than medically necessary on premises during treatment hours. And for the third time, this one by an overwhelming 69.9% at last count, Californians resoundingly rejected what was called Prop. 29 this time around.
