Millions of women born in the 1950s have been affected by changes to the State Pension age
SNP MP Patricia Gibson highlighted the ongoing plight of millions of women born in the 1950s affected by changes to the State Pension age to MPs in Parliament on Thursday. More than 3.6million from the Women Against State Pension Inequality campaign are currently awaiting the publication of the final report from the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman into the way the Department for Work and Pensions managed the age rise.
She then urged the Leader of the House, Penny Mordaunt MP, to “make a statement setting out her support for a speedy completion of the Ombudsman’s report and a prompt response from the UK Government as to how they will recognise and address the appalling injustices suffered by WASPI women”. In July 2021, the PHSO’s stage 1 investigation ruled that the DWP failed to communicate the age changes to women born in the 1950s with enough urgency, finding it guilty of ‘maladministration’. WASPI campaigners recently said that thousands of women were forced to change their plans at the last minute and unable to rely on limited savings.
The research also indicated that 32 per cent of affected women were unable to secure alternative employment after attempting to rejoin the workforce, plunging tens of thousands of women into poverty.
