Vaccine candidate prevents diarrhea, improves growth in animal model NatureComms

To measure antibacterial antibody responses against, serum samples were drawn at regular intervals from Control infants , VDI-1/3/12 infants , VI-1/3/12 infants , and VI-1/3/5 infants .ELISA Units were measured longitudinally for each infant and the geometric mean was calculated at each time point . The 0 month time point represents maternal antibody titers from serum samples of each infant’s dam that were drawn at the infant’s 1 month time point.

Diarrheal disease incidence/hospitalization and mortality were monitored for up to 18 months of age and spanned across two birth cohorts born in 2017 and 2018 . In 2017, a group of 139 unvaccinated Control animals were monitored for an average of 420 days, resulting in 58,326 exposure days in which there were 28 hospitalized cases ofdiarrhea and an incidence rate of 20%. Contemporaneous groups of vaccinated infants were monitored in parallel for diarrheal disease.

Disparities in mobile phone ownership reflect inequities in access to healthcareDisparities in mobile phone ownership reflect inequities in access to healthcareAuthor summary Mobile phone data are increasingly used to inform public health efforts in both high and low-income settings due to convenience and growing phone penetration. However, digital inequities are ubiquitous and more pronounced in areas where mobile phone ownership is low or heterogeneous. The biases introduced by using mobile phone data to represent populations and their health care needs are rarely measured but have the potential to be detrimental to the most vulnerable segments of populations. We conducted detailed interviews measuring mobile phone ownership, mobility, and access to healthcare in mobile and remote populations in Namibia. We found that mobile phone owners represent a small proportion of the population that is highly mobile and has better access to healthcare. This is likely not unique. Due to the nature of their collection, mobile phone data often underrepresent vulnerable populations. This study demonstrates that uncritically using mobile phone data to inform public health decisions can perpetuate health inequities.
