“Most people in clinics in Ohio knew this is what we’d be facing,” said a policy and partnerships associate at Preterm Ohio, an independent abortion clinic in Shaker Hts. “We just did not expect to have such a huge change in services on the same day.'

CLEVELAND, Ohio — By Friday night, hours after the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, it became illegal to perform abortions in Ohio after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, typically around six weeks gestation, effectively eliminating abortion in the state.

Olivo said that they received word Friday afternoon from legal expert and advisor to the clinic Jessie Hill. Friday night they began calling patients and informing them that they had to cancel their appointments. Women Have Options, a national network of abortion funds to provide women with assistance related to an out-of-state abortionFriday afternoon, after the Supreme Court Decision, and before the ban on Ohio abortions had been announced, representatives from Planned Parenthood spoke to the press and conveyed a sense of optimism about the fight ahead

In anticipation of the Supreme Court ruling, many states, including Ohio, either passed or discussed trigger bans -- laws that would go into effect immediately upon the reversal of Roe v. Wade, banning all abortions at any stage, with no exceptions. Ohio’s trigger ban didn’t make it through the state legislature in time to take effect immediately, but many expect tobill revived once the state assembly is back in session in the fall that will end all abortions in the state.

Planned Parenthood provides health services other than abortion and are open and seeing patients for those services, but the doors are locked and the lights out at some other independent clinics.
