Babbitt's shooting death has become a rallying cry for some conservatives who have downplayed or promoted misleading portrayals of the Capitol attack, including former President Donald Trump. Babbitt had been part of a mob trying to break into the Speaker's Lobby outside the House chamber when she was fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer.
"The actions of the officer in this case potentially saved Members and staff from serious injury and possible death from a large crowd of rioters who forced their way into the U.S. Capitol and to the House Chamber where Members and staff were steps away," the department said.against the officer who shot Babbitt. The department launched its own internal investigation after federal prosecutors closed their criminal investigation.
