A car expert warns against the growing trend of using boiling or salt water to defrost car windows, as these methods can cause significant damage to the vehicle, including cracking windscreens and corroding paintwork.
As the countdown to Christmas begins, we're all feeling the chill with frosty mornings becoming a regular occurrence across the UK. This often means we're greeted by icy windscreens, and while many of us reach for the de-icer, some drivers are trying out different hacks to clear their cars quickly.
Car specialist Robert Webster, from MyCarGlass, cautioned: "More TikTok hacks are going viral as users share quick-fix solutions to common problems. One of the most recent includes using boiling water or salt water to defrost car windows in winter, but this could actually do more harm than good." Webster further elaborated on the vulnerability of car windscreens: "Windscreens are made from laminated glass which while it can withstand normal stress, it can be vulnerable to extreme temperature shifts. What's more, the damage might not be immediate but over time cracks can appear which can spread.
He further warned against using salt water to melt ice, highlighting that it can corrode the car's paintwork, glass, and metal components. Salt can infiltrate the tiniest cracks and chips in your windscreen, causing them to spread.
