Carer swerves jail after stealing £20k from bedridden patient and splurging on phones and electrical goods from Very
A 'mean' carer stole more than £20,000 from a vulnerable, bed-bound woman she was employed to look after.
The woman's condition was so severe she required a hoist to help her out of bed to use the bathroom, Ms Patel said. The same year, Houghton took on a position with Guardian and was allocated as the woman's main carer. She helped with cooking, personal care and shopping, and was trusted with the woman's bank card to buy cigarettes and groceries for her.
Further enquiries showed Houghton had set up internet banking and registered her own voice as a password to the account. She had been making regular payments to her own account and was making regular monthly payments to the catalogue company Very. On August 21 2020, officers went to Houghton's home to speak to her about the allegations. Houghton became upset and repeatedly told officers that if she went with the officers she wouldn't be going back, as her husband would never forgive her.
Houghton left Guardian Carers in July 2020 and looked for other work, however with the criminal matter hanging over her head she was unable to apply for care roles. She hid her offending from her husband and slept in her car to keep up the appearance she was going to work, however in January 2021, her husband learned of what she had done and the couple separated.
"Your activity left the victim from being substantially in credit to being overdrawn. One can only imagine the shock and distress when she realised what you had done."
