The burglar threw paint and bleach around and threw toys out of the window
Mohammed Ejaz, 23, was seen outside the house in Sarah Street when the family left for the day at 10:15am on April 8, 2024. He was singing and swigging from a bottle of beer, Preston Crown Court heard.
The damage was valued at around £1,000 with £500 in stolen goods. Two weeks later, officers attended an unrelated call to a house in Linden Avenue, Darwen, where Ejaz was sofa surfing. They spoted clothing taken during the burglary and arrested the intruder on suspicion of burglary. He tried a number of doors in the area before breaking into the family home, hoping he would be arrested and given stable accommodation and three meals a day. He was suffering mental health difficulties after becoming homeless, the court heard.
"What they found inside their home was little short of carnage. They would have been absolutely devastated at seeing their family home turned upside down by you in this gratuitous and destructive way.
