Caroline Hirsch, who will celebrate the 40th anniversary of her New York club Carolines on Broadway next year, talks about running a live-performance business in a pandemic and the future of both stand-up and Carolines

Caroline Hirsch may run one of the most successful comedy clubs in the country, but she readily admits that she is not funny and she has never wanted to be on stage. “It’s not my thing,” she says on a video call from her home in Palm Beach, Fla., where she lives with her partner, Andrew Fox, when they are not in Manhattan or the Hamptons.
Yet Ms. Hirsch, 69, has a savant-like knack for spotting comic talent. Next year she will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Carolines on Broadway, her New York club, which has been an essential stop for rising comedic stars from Ellen DeGeneres to Kevin Hart. “I like to put the pieces together,” explains Ms. Hirsch. “I don’t know what it is, but I can watch a tiny peck of an act, and I get what they’re doing and I get that they’re gonna grow, and I get they’ll be a big star.
