Catherine the Great star Helen Mirren and screenwriter Nigel Williams on the captivating Russian ruler maligned by history

In spite of Potemkin’s significance in Catherine’s life, the military commander is a popularly forgotten figure thanks to censoring done by Catherine’s own son Paul.

Catherine—who had been born Sophia Augusta Fredericka—was pushed into marriage with Peter, heir to the Russian throne, by her domineering, socially conniving mother. Once Catherine moved to Russia at age 14, she propelled herself into the hearts of the Russian people—studying the language so determinedly while pacing cold stone floors that she caught pneumonia; a testament to the people that Catherine was willing to risk her health for their country.

As a leader Catherine was ahead of her time—a great patron of women’s education and equality who built an extensive art collection and established a high-profile correspondence with Voltaire. When Russia was threatened by smallpox, Catherine was the first to be inoculated to prove to her people that the measure was safe. And she endeared herself to her public by occasionally mingling with the people.
