A well-known record-setting cave diver with decades of experience died in Texas while exploring one of the deepest underwater cave systems in the nation.
Brett Hemphill, 56, was on an expedition in Phantom Springs Cave in West Texas about 500 miles southwest from Dallas.Hemphill was diving with KUR director Andy Pitkin last Wednesday when the men became separated and Hemphill didn’t resurface.The dive began about 10:45 a.m. when the men were exploring a lead starting in 450 feet of water at about 7,300 feet of penetration, a post on KUR’s Facebook page says.
It took days for Hemphill’s body to be recovered from more than a mile into the underwater cave and involved a number of divers traveling thousands of miles to help, according to KUR.“Cave diver recoveries are logistically difficult and this one is especially so,” the post said. KUR will be releasing a statement with additional information on the incident at a later time, Pitkin wrote in KUR’s latest post.
“Until then, please allow us some time to come to terms with his loss, as up until now we have been focused on the recovery,” he said.previously setting up sediment traps, collecting water quality data, and surveying more than 8,000 feet of the cave, according to TEKDiveUSA. The dive was record setting.
