CC Sabathia spoke about Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón at Yankee Stadium on Monday, advising that the Yankees bring Luis Severino back in free agency.
Cole enters play this week with a 13-4 record, posting a 2.81 ERA over 31 starts. That’s the lowest ERA of any qualifying pitcher in the AL. The right-hander leads the league in innings pitched , he’s third in strikeouts and second in opponent batting average .
Sabathia threw his final pitch in pinstripes in October of 2019, just a few months before Cole agreed to his record-setting contract with the Yankees, a nine-year deal in free agency worth $324 million. Since hanging up his cleats, Sabathia has kept enough of an eye on the Yankees to give his thoughts on a few other key players, from struggling starters to upstart rookies:Sabathia’s first season with the Yankees — after inking his $161 million contract — couldn’t have been more of a success.
It’s been a disastrous walk year for the right-hander, but even with Severino’s ghastly injury history — and his poor production in 2023 — Sabathia doesn’t want to see his former teammate in another uniform just yet. “It’s baseball,” Sabathia said. “You have bad stretches and this won’t be the last bad stretch that he has. He’ll have more. It’s how you overcome, how you are as a teammate when you’re going through these things. And I think he’s been great. He’s in front of his locker answering questions, trying to figure out as much as he can, just like everybody else.”Sabathia made it clear that the Yankees need to add arms this winter, whether it’s Severino or otherwise.
Sabathia assured that Yankees fans should be encouraged about the potential of this young core that’s finally debuting in pinstripes, though. It didn’t result in a postseason bid this year, but as Sabathia experienced in 2016 with the emergence of Gary Sánchez, Aaron Judge and others, this might be the instant rebuild that this franchise has been waiting for … mixed with some offseason spending, of course.
