The council is yet to receive estimates of how much cash will be needed to repair the historic 1920s Mercat landmark, which saw hundreds of fans climb its sides and wave flags from the top.

Glasgow City Council has called for football fans to 'show basic respect to the city' following 'unacceptable' damage caused to city streets and building during Celtic's league title party.

In 2022, repairs to the Mercat cost the council an extra £4000 after fans broke into the landmark during the celebrations. The category A-listed landmark, designed by John Boyd in the Scottish baronial style, is the last standing piece of the meeting place of the Royal Burgh of Glasgow which was demolished in 1921.

A spokesman for the council told Glasgow Live: "These costs highlight the unacceptable disruption and antisocial behaviour experienced in the Trongate in May at the end of the previous football season.
